Financial Security for Canada’s Seniors Under Threat

Old Age Security & Pension in Canada Subject To 50% Cuts

How To Return Fairness – Reform & Repeal Harmful Laws

What every Canadian needs to know – This affects You

Even if you are not one of up to 3 million seniors set to be slapped down, these harmful laws can affect you!  Here’s how…

Even if you are a mid-lifer with an older parent or a senior, and before you or your senior family member begins thinking about retirement in Canada, know this can affect you!

Your seniors may suddenly need financial assistance from you whether for living costs or medical costs because they didn’t talk about their early life decisions resulting in 50% cuts at source to their pensions.

Canadians over the age of 65 now have the highest insolvency and bankruptcy rates in the country, according to the latest family finances report by the Vanier Institute for the Family. (Summary from CBC.ca, June 2012 and Vanier full report download PDF)

How can you let them down? How will that affect your personal life-style budget? Would those vacation plans go on ‘hold?’

Even if you are a young successful single person or a well-off older person, you pay taxes, and when this tsunami of seniors that is set to be legislated into poverty hits your municipal social programs budget or your province’s budget then your political leaders may legislate you to pay more tax to help meet operating budget shortfalls.

Or, they could cut existing programs, like garbage pick up from once weekly to once every two weeks, or snow clearing of only main streets and not yours, or cut transit runs in half. What then?

Even if you are a successful couple with a young family of your own, what if when you have to take your children to the emergency room at your local hospital what will you do then if you find it jammed with seniors?

Up to 3 million seniors who may be affected by these harmful laws forcing them into poverty would have otherwise afforded their medication. Those unable to afford prescriptions may  be unable to prevent age-onset disease or severe or traumatic symptoms, resulting in  last-minute care at emergency rooms and acute care wards. How will your kids fair then if the emergency room is jammed? What if it is you needing emergency care but the healthcare facility is jammed? Then what?

It doesn’t have to get that bad if the harmful laws are repealed.

If you are, or someone you know is, one of up to 3 million seniors at risk to have their Canadian Old Age Security and Canada Pension Payments (CPP benefits, OAS, GIS) cut by 50% by these unfair laws, then you want to know what to do to change that. We show you how.

This is Big: Up to 3 million seniors at risk ~ 1 in every 4

Despite some recent discussions about cuts to Old Age Security, Canada Pension Plan, and the Guaranteed Income Supplement, the fact is that existing laws in Canada are already set to slap down seniors and pensioners, cutting 50% off these Elderly Benefits at source.

These federal laws could apply to 1 in 4 seniors. They made life-changing decisions between the sixties and 2012 and that puts them at this risk. What sort of event makes one in every four baby boomers at risk? We show you that here.

Risky Retirement = Budget Cuts To Provincial Programs!

These cuts to seniors and pensioners will make retirement in Canada questionable at best when legislation promises to put up to 3 million into poverty.  With that, increasing numbers of poor signing up for public assistance may overwhelm social and support programs and deplete budgets for programs and other services that YOU WANT.

Read more about potential cuts to your programs below in “Budget Bombshell.”

What to do about?  This is ‘preventable’ and the remedy rests in every Canadian’s hands. To make change to this unfairness and get rid of the harm contact your MPs and Provincial MPs or MLAs and help them to have the courage to repeal these harmful laws.

Here’s why: All this can affect nearly all Canadians in some way at some point. Many are counting on you to help change this unnecessary unfairness and harm.

We equip you for helping to make change

Your MP and your Provincial Legislative Member depend on you for your votes. They have to pick up the phone. Speaking with knowledge gets them to listen to what you are saying. Writing with strength in knowledge and speaking with conviction will be recognized by who you contact. What you do does matter.

SLAPScan.org is a non-partisan, non-profit online and real-life community designed to inform and encourage seniors to proactively participate in Canada’s democratic process with this single focus:

Stop the legislated attacks on pensioners and seniors. Stop legislating seniors into poverty after decades of promising them dignity and health.

For more information about us, see the link in the right hand column, “ABOUT US.”

Call and write to your Federal MPs and Provincial MPPs/MLAs to stop this unfair and harmful treatment.

We need everybody, young and old, all taxpaying citizens to join together to ‘pull on the same end of the rope’ until we fully restore all that was promised and without conditions.  See MP/MPP contact information in right hand column (Scroll down) –>

As a small ‘Thanks for helping others,” here is a link to a free viewing of a classic movie…

Watch Senior Spencer Tracy Get ‘Shorted’ After All His Hard Work

This whole thing about seniors getting shorted at the end of hard work and paying dues reminds me of a movie I watched as a young boy, “The Old Man And The Sea” (1958) with Spencer Tracy. Maybe you remember it. The main character is an old fisherman…(continue to read more or view the movie).

Today’s Seniors & Pensioners = Biggest Wave of Voters

They could also become the single largest group of poor in Canada’s history who will be seeking local social assistance.

After a lifetime of paying mandatory premiums every payday into the federal government’s Elderly Benefits plans (CPP Deductions, OAS payroll taxes), many retiring seniors are in for the economic shock of their lives: a Partial Pension.

Approximately 75% of all pensioners  rely upon their government public pension to retire in dignity and in health. Retiring in dignity and health is the social contract made with Canadians and their Federal Government (read federal gov pension site).

For these 75% of Canadians their public pension benefit payouts represent approximately one-quarter of the retiree’s former regular income from gainful employment.

For those millions of seniors that means they may be forced to live out the rest of their lives on only ONE-EIGHTH (one half of one-Quarter,  1/2 x 1/4 = 1/8) of what they were formerly earning.  Life will become a struggle for survival under such a broken social contract.

Attention All Provinces: Budget Bombshell Coming Your Way

“Costs will escalate and Revenues will shrink: It is a classic ‘pincer’ nightmare for government leaders and program managers.”

Next,

This issue is preventable but will otherwise cause wide-spread risk of downloaded costs to provinces of an estimated $100 Billion.* Provinces are expected to revolt over this massive hit.

*[See details by SLAPScan Co-founder, Martin Wong, of how the Liberal’s legislation becomes a boomerang, hitting provinces with a $100 billion download.]

Impoverished “HALF-pensioners” will seek supplemental social assistance locally, thereby, in massive numbers, will threaten program budgets of:

  • Provinces
  • Municipalities/cities
  • Faith-based groups (churches, synagogues, mosques)
  • Community support organizations: Food Banks, The Salvation Army, The United Way network, and many more…

Moreover, the already-tight provincial healthcare budgets with expanding outlays will take a completely unnecessary additional hit: Earlier than expected hits and more acute demands in massive numbers from legislated-poor seniors. Policy makers have been warned about the surge in seniors and surge in healthcare costs.

If the present set of harmful laws are permitted to persist, then hospitals will be forced to deliver more expensive treatment regimes, more frequently:

Due to more numerous seniors being struck by poverty they will be forced to choose between medicine maintenance versus food or shelter. It has already been shown across America where those afflicted but poor often seek delayed-to-the-last-minute treatment, meaning: Emergency Rooms.

Hospital Emergency Room visits or Acute Bed Stays cost much more per patient than medicine maintenance.

Emergency Room and Acute Care resources, stuffed with poor seniors seeking last-minute care may become overwhelmed or perhaps unavailable to average Canadian families.

Reduced Revenue

Reduced Tax Revenue to Federal, Provincial, Municipal Gov’s

These laws could actually REDUCE Tax Revenues for Federal, Provincial, and City governments by:

  1. Discouraging formation of new families: fewer marriages, fewer babies and
  2. Discouraging desired immigrants (the ones the Immigration Minister wants) and
  3. Curbing repatriation of our citizens from around the world to retire to Canada.

More — Instead of bolstering our tax bases on a sustainable basis, there may be an exodus from, a rejection of, Canada as a place to live, to work, to start a family, and to retire in. There are more hospitable countries in the Western World.

Tell MPs, MPPs/MLAs,

“This issue increases program costs while it reduces tax revenues. At the root cause is old legislation set to blow up in your faces.”

Then ask them,

“When would it be a good time to act on how to prevent that?”

Politicians: An Electoral Bombshell

The legislation causing this harm came from a prior majority government (and its provincial derivatives) beginning with enactment in 1997, and it may well become more than a backfire: An electoral bombshell to those responsible for these laws.

The Seniors Block is the single largest voting block in Canada’s history.

Seniors will be heard and understood. As a senior, you may offer politicians a choice as to when exactly you will be listened to:

Now, or if not now, then at the polls on Election Day.

Tell your MP and MPP/MLA that this doesn’t pass the smell test and you want the unfairness and harm stopped. And, if the harm doesn’t go away, we seniors will replace those politicians with someone who will commit to ending the harm from that set of laws.

Despite giving it their lip service to the demographic shift in population, most federal and provincial legislators are shown to continue to fail to grasp the magnitude of the massive harm to seniors, or, how these laws will impact government goals and budgets.

Demographic reports show massive numbers of boomers coming as they retire in huge waves. As estimated here, perhaps 1 in 4, or up to 3 million boomers could be legislated into poverty.
